Going GREEN on your Wedding Day!
I was was recently interviewed by a magazine about new trends such as going "GREEN" so I thought I would share my answers.

Q's & A's

Are you seeing evidence of a trend in green weddings or environmentally friendly weddings?

Yes, GREEN is in… and Event and Wedding Planners are taking notice.  Tillman and Company has completed the search for vendors who are green friendly.. As well as, coming up with ideas so that Brides can fill good knowing that their planning experts has the knowledge and resources to pull off a GREEN Wedding from every aspect of designing her special day.

Needs some ideas for a green wedding?

Wedding Gown – Go Vintage (recycle one from a friend) or pick a dress made from natural fibers. Bridesmaids, Mother of the Bride etc. – Again, Natural Fibers Favors – Plants, Lucky Bamboo and Flower Seeds OR do a donation to a charity (Instead of favors ..We have made a donation on behalf our pet Oscar to the Human Society.)

  • Place cards, Programs, Invitations, Table Numbers, Guestbook – Use Recycled Paper
  • Food – Go Organic/Raw or Vegetable that are grown here locally..
  • Organic Wine – Organic Wine
  • Centerpieces – Soy Candles Flowers – Pesticide Free Flowers
Are today's brides and grooms interested in making a statement with large and small elements of their weddings and making them more environmentally friendly?

Absolutely, they are make large statements…From the Wedding Gown to the Invitations and we are ready with the resources here in Houston. Do you see this trend increasing in the future, as the green trends in other industries spills over into the wedding industry?

Guaranteed - we have to become a part of the trend - no matter how big or small the event …every bride is hearing about GREEN Weddings and will want to bring some aspect of it into their wedding before their friends do…

With the first of the echo boom children reaching the age of 19, our research suggests that the next 5 years and up will see an increasing demand for wedding services. In your professional opinion, is this an accurate opinion?

Every bride wants to feel special and that means hiring a professional wedding planner to work side by side with her prior and on the day of her wedding. With shows like platinum weddings every Bride dreams about their special day and want it all! They believe by hiring a Wedding Planner will get them there..

ACPWC is continually growing and yes there are more wedding planners today than 7 years ago when I started.. but here's the challenge …very few are truly certified, experienced and professional.

Here's what get some entrepreneurs into trouble who want to become wedding planners – I've heard this over 50 times “A Bride just planned their own wedding and would like to become a wedding planner”. I hear it all the time… Well, there's so much more to it … you wear many different hats, juggle many balls in the air and must do it with grace, style and a smile. Not everyone is cut out for this type of career. Wedding Planners are expected to be at the beck and call of their clients and make few if “any” mistakes – it's their wedding day not just any BBQ in someone's backyard and should be treated with all the attention to detail.

I recommend to those Brides who want to become a wedding planner - get liability insurance, (Brides do sue), know your competition first, find out how many couples are getting marriage licenses in your city, what is the market penetration and do you have a business plan.

If so, how should aspiring wedding industry entrepreneurs (from Coordinators to photographers to florists etc) use this information to plan their business?

Anticipate what the trends are before they happen…take a hint from the fashion magazines on the upcoming colors and read the newspaper…you will be surprise how much information is available to us by just being informed and aware…For example, from how couples are meeting, to what's HOT in food and fashion trends of colors that are going to be HOT before every bridesmaid is wearing it.

Are there any other large wedding industry trends you're seeing develop that new entrepreneurs should be aware of? If so, please share your thoughts and advice.

Couples are meeting more and more on the internet than before ….thanks to e harmony, My Space, Chat Rooms, Internet Sites, IM and more.  Knowing just a little information could change alot about your business such as how and where you advertise…so, if people are meeting on the internet…think of some creative ways to get your company name out there via the internet….
If I told you how that...it would be toooo easy!

An idiot for a boyfriend!
Dear Parsley, My bridesmaid, who is my best friend in the whole wide world, has a complete idiot for a boyfriend. She has lost a lot of friends because of him, and many of my guests who are coming to my wedding have asked that I don't invite him. Both my fiancé and I don't want him there either. The problem is that my friend is completely in love with this guy, and they have been dating for the last 5 years, so it's not just a fling. How do I diplomatically tell her that she can't bring him with her? She is going to be quite busy anyway the whole evening, which means her boyfriend would be spending much of the time alone as he doesn't really know many others who have been invited. Please Help. Can I have a Wedding for $3000.00?
Here are the factors: Sleeping Rooms - hotels aren't big on doing weddings without hotel rooms (that's how they make their real money is on the sleeping rooms - not to mention they can bump your wedding and relocate you if a big company comes in to rent out the hotel) so you will need to look at places that are stand alone...Like a reception location, boat, country club such as a location that's not dependant on sleeping rooms etc. F& B Min. - If you are set on having it at a hotel - look at the smaller hotels and ask what the Food and Beverage Min. is for the entire ballroom or sections of the ballroom and stay away from popular locations or central located locations. Number of Guests - how many guests? This plays an important role.. keep in mind (Drinks & Non Alcoholic (are the included or not included) Food - Go with a Chicken Meal (Buffet or Plated) whichever is cheaper. Stay away from cheap beef. Heavy appetizers instead of the meal isn't always cheaper BAR - Go with a Cash Bar and Try Passed Appetizers - people will eat less when appetizers are tray passed (as long as there are no added fees for staffing) if there is do a Cheese/Cracker and a Vegetable Tray then have them take it away when it all gone. Ask - If the location allows for you to bring your own alcohol? if they do..then, bring in the Beer and Wine - Then, have a Beer and Wine Only if you are planning on hosting the alcohol. Have your ceremony and reception at the same location. You can save the cost on a separate location and limo Ask what is included in the packages then, go look at the location maybe even while they are setting up for another event...look at the chairs, look at how the staff is dressed...etc. Do they include a cake and cake cutting service? Ask them if you can bring in your own cake and will they reduce the price of the package...

Question: Do I need a Theme for My Wedding?
Question: Do I need a Theme for My Wedding? By Our Wedding Expert - Loree Tillman, Wedding Designer My approach is very simple – Every party, event and/or wedding has a “Theme”… It's that so-called “Theme”…… that is carried throughout the entire planning process. I.e. Save the dates, Invitations, Food, Cake or Dessert, Lighting, Music and so on… It might be “beachy-beachy”, it might be “Old Hollywood Glam”, the color “Red” and/or a WORD….. Such as Happiness! When, I sit down with a Couple for a design session that is one of my first questions – What's your theme? Tell me what you see on your day……. Now, it's my job as an experienced designer to make it happen….within BUDGET! If a bride doesn't have a particular theme ….we create a “Theme”… by bring out their personalities, interests, likes and dislikes and/or base it on the location(s) of the event. Yes, there are some themes more popular than others which may be a default of the location…California Beaches, Wine Country…but don't feel you have to stay in a box and keep an open mind and explore all your options by looking in books, home décor, event and wedding magazines… The “THEME” is the most important piece and the starting point for designing, creating completing the overall experience for the guest(s)! Brides might say's it's all about the “Bride” but….. It's all about “having a successful hosted event by the newly married couple” which is about the “experience the guests have”… that will keep them talking for years to come! Happy Planning!

What to ask your Wedding Consultant?
Most importantly are they Certified? Ask to see their certifate for any education or training they have had...some consultant claim to be certified and aren't. They have only recieved a "certificate of completion" which is nothing compared to being "Certified" which means professional trained. There are only a few and programs can take 3 to 5 years to complete. By going with a consultant who is professional trained - you are going with the consultant who have made it a life change and will be there on the day of your wedding! It's there reputation!
